Research-based Health Literacy Materials and Instruction Guide - Beginning and Intermediate ABE and ESL Levels

These health literacy materials meet both the need of adults to enhance their literacy skills as well as their need to navigate the health care system and begin to achieve better health care for themselves and their families. These materials integrate literacy skills and practice with pertinent health information.

Health Literacy Special Collection: Tools and Resources for Health Literacy Initiatives

The goal of this collection is to provide a starting point for finding health literacy resources that will help people from many sectors to improve health literacy, improve health outcomes, and reduce disparities in health.

Pictograms of Health Topics

The US Pharmacopoeia Web site offers 81 downloadable pictograms for use in teaching health topics.

Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (OTAN)

Instructional materials for teaching health literacy are available on the OTAN Web site. To access health literacy information on the OTAN Web site, log onto the Web site and click on the Research and Reference link, then choose the Library link, and then click on the Online Documents and enter the term health literacy in the search box at the top of the page. Among the resources you will find there are the following: Health Literacy: Tools for Instructors Resources to help professionals working with adult English language learners.

Project Care

The Project Care Web site is designed for high-intermediate to advanced English language learners who want to learn about caring for others while improving their communication with medical personnel. A collaboration between World Education/US and University of Michigan Press, the Web site provides audio and video for listening practice and vocabulary development, and it contains handouts to project-based activities. The activities on this site will help students learn more about important health issues while practicing English. The site has an accompanying workbook available for purchase.
