Located on the CALPRO Web site, the Virtual Workrooms provide adult educators with instant access to research–based professional development resources on a particular topic.

In 2011–12, educators may visit Virtual Workrooms and an associated e-CoP on three topics:

Companion Electronic Community of Practice (e-CoP)

Each Virtual Workroom has a discussion area in CALPRO’s electronic Community of Practice (e-CoP), a separate Web site located at http://calproecop.groupsite.com. The e-CoP is open to all eligible adult educators, i.e., those who are currently employed by programs that receive funding through the California Department of Education, Adult Education Office.

The mission of the CALPRO e-CoP is to expand the professional knowledge of adult educators through an exchange of practitioner wisdom that ultimately results in increased student learning. Whether they are engaging in e-CoP discussions, attending e-CoP Webinars, sharing their own resources or accessing new ones from the e-CoP or the companion Virtual Workrooms, CALPRO encourages its e-CoP members to begin their professional learning with a thoughtful consideration of their students' current abilities, needs, and goals, and continue to keep the student's perspective in sharp focus throughout their professional learning activities.

Virtual Workroom for Multilevel ESL Instructors

The Virtual Workroom for Multilevel ESL Instructors offers a wide variety of professional resources organized around five central challenges in multilevel instruction: needs assessment, lesson planning, group work, materials, and evaluation.

Intended Audience
  • ESL teachers working with a broad spectrum of levels, i.e., a class where learners may range from pre-literate to low–advanced.
  • ESL teachers working with narrow spectrum of levels (e.g., Intermediate ESL).

Teachers often see variation in skill-level across an entire class or within an individual student (e.g., a fairly fluent speaker may be a struggling reader or writer).

Virtual Workroom on Workforce Readiness

Federal and state policy and funding practices clearly identify workforce readiness as a top priority for adult education, including adult literacy instruction.

Toward that end, the Virtual Workroom on Workforce Readiness provides adult educators of ABE, ASE, and ESL programs with a range of professional development resources focusing on three areas:

  1. Instructional Materials and Strategies
  2. Related Research and Additional Resources
  3. Program Infrastructure Supports

A companion electronic Community of Practice promotes an exchange of practitioner wisdom in these three areas.
