Mastering the English Language Proficiency Standards

Goals for This Module

The new English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards for Adult Education were released in fall 2016. The goals of this module are to introduce ESL instructors to the new standards and how they provide the language support to meet the rigorous requirements of the College and Career Readiness Standards for adults; to explore and practice applying the standards to teaching; and to develop a deep understanding of the requirements of academic rigor along with the scaffolding strategies to help adult students reach their goals.

Goals of Session 2

The goals of this session are to provide (1) an in-depth look at connecting elements of rigor— language strategies and critical thinking to the ELP Standards and (2) scaffolding strategies to help adult students reach their goals.

Objectives for Session 2

By the end of Session 2, participants will be able to:

  • connect the ELP Standards to the three elements of rigor;
  • use the ELP Standards to support instructional planning; and
  • identify scaffolds and task to promote successful outcomes for all adult English language learners working to meet rigorous college and career readiness standards.
