Facilitated Online Courses
In these courses, a subject matter expert facilitates discussions with a group of participants over a period of either one or four weeks. Participants log in at different times of the week to access course content and assignments, join in discussions, and complete application activities. Each course offers participants additional opportunities for interaction through one or more real-time webinars, each lasting 60–90 minutes.

FORMAT
The Facilitated Online Course format features a mixture of reading content, activities, and live webinars on topics related to adult education to support adult educators and administrators. Courses are delivered over a period of one or four weeks.

Duration and course hours:
- One-week courses: 4.5 hours, including one 90-minute webinar
- Four-week courses: 14–16* hours, including two 60- to 90-minute webinars; also eligible for CEUs (see Credits & Certificates below)
*Hours depend on the course and will be specified in the course syllabus/Moodle.
ENROLLMENT & REGISTRATION
Enrollment is limited and on a first-registered, first-enrolled basis. Additional information on enrollment appears on the Registration page.

Participants interested in enrolling should have a device capable of using the following software and hardware:

- Speakers/headphones
- Web browser (Edge, Safari, Chrome, Firefox)
- Zoom to attend live webinars
CREDITS & CERTIFICATES
All participants who successfully complete a Facilitated Online Course will receive a certificate of completion (via email) which includes the number of course hours. Additionally, participants who complete a four-week course will be eligible to apply for and obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from CSU Sacramento's College of Continuing Education, for a fee. CALPRO will provide the appropriate forms a participant will need to obtain CEUs. CEUs are calculated based on the number of course hours.

- How many CEUs is a Facilitated Online Course worth?
- The number of CEUs depends on the number of course hours. Here's an example: Effective Lesson Planning is a 14-hour course, eligible for 1.4 CEUs. Resource: https://cce.csus.edu/course-credit-service-ceus
- What happens if I sign up for a course and can't log in for a couple of days?
- Each course is allocated either one or four weeks of time. If a participant cannot log in for a couple of days, there is no penalty of any kind. It will be the responsibility of the participant to complete the course at their pace within the course period to be considered for a certificate of completion/CEUs. Participants are also strongly encouraged to attend the live webinars that pertain to the content of the course.
- How do I know if I qualify to take a CALPRO Facilitated Online Course?
- Participants may qualify for CALPRO course offerings if they are based in California and are part of WIOA Title II– and/or CAEP-funded agencies.
Effective Teaching for Adult Educators (Online)
Course Description:
This course provides a framework for teachers to reflect on their own teaching and to identify areas on which they would like to focus and where they would like to improve their practice. The focus is on building an understanding of the purpose, structure, and use of the Adult Education Teacher Competencies so that participants can reflect on and refine their practice across four domains: using data to inform instruction, using evidence-based instruction, communicating effectively with students, and planning for professional growth.
The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course, with a makeup option offered to accommodate time conflicts. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.
Goals:
The goal of this course is to build teachers’ capacity to identify the skills and knowledge required for excellent teaching and to evaluate in which areas they are strong and in which areas professional development could support improvement.

Supporting Immigrant Integration Through Civics Education (Online)
Course Description:
Adult education plays a significant role in the lives of immigrants; it is often the first door through which a new immigrant encounters the world of services and supports available to them as they seek to increase their skills to reach their life goals. This course will help educators support immigrants through civics education as understood within the lens of the California Immigrant Integration Initiative and aligned to approved EL Civics metrics.
The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course, with a makeup option offered to accommodate time conflicts. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (15 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.
Goal:
Participants will be able to locate and adapt Teaching Skills That Matter lesson materials on Civics Education topics in order to support immigrant students at all levels of ESL to become successful members of their communities.

Using Questioning Strategies to Improve Instruction (Online)
Course Description:
Are you frustrated at not getting the right answers from your students? Maybe it's because you're not asking the right questions! This course offers questioning strategies that foster higher-order thinking skills while developing responses beyond the level of recall. Help students connect the dots as they process new information to answer questions designed with a purpose.
The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course, with a makeup option offered to accommodate time conflicts. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.
Goals:

Teaching Math to Adults (Online)
Workshop Description:
Discover innovative strategies to transform math instruction in this one-week CALPRO math course designed for adult educators. Participants will explore the Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMPs) and their practical application in fostering student success, delving into the science of brain-based learning to address math anxiety and promote long-term retention. They will learn how to create lessons that encourage productive struggle, persistence, and confidence in tackling challenging concepts. Additionally, the course provides tools to integrate technology and evidence-based instructional routines that enhance engagement and align with the SMPs.

Course Description:
This course looks at formative assessment as a way to monitor learning and address student needs effectively as they work toward intended targets or outcomes. The course highlights strategies for gathering data on learning in progress, as well as approaches to responsive, data-informed instructional planning.
The course takes place entirely online and runs for one week. Daily participation is required, though participants may log in whenever they wish. A live webinar is scheduled during the course, with a makeup option offered to accommodate time conflicts. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate of participation (4.5 hours).
Goals:
This course aims to highlight the importance of frequent, formative assessment as a tool for collecting data to support thoughtful instructional planning.
