California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project

Today’s adult education classrooms are welcoming a growing number of younger learners whose high‑school years were impacted by pandemic‑era disruptions. This three‑hour workshop equips educators with practical, evidence‑based strategies for engaging today's adult learners. Drawing on CALPRO’s motivation and persistence for adult learners training, participants will explore how to set clear and high expectations, build trust through social‑emotional learning, support goal setting and self‑management, and design student-centered learning experiences that engage all students.

The session also highlights active learning approaches—such as providing autonomy, collaborative learning, and contextualized instruction—that resonate strongly with today’s learners with varied needs. Educators will leave with ready‑to‑use strategies to motivate, connect with, and support all students in their classrooms.

This tailored regional CoP is designed for the staff and teachers at ABC Adult School. Registration through the school is required. 

There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.

In this lesson, ABE students develop their awareness about the value of being proactive, both in education and in the workplace. They examine seven habits of highly effective people. In an expansion activity, students write a response to a job application question, in which they illustrate how they have been proactive in overcoming an obstacle.

In this lesson, ABE or ASE students prepare a 60– to 90–second speech in response to a question commonly asked in a job interview. Students study the qualities of a good speaker and evaluate their peers' speeches according to a matrix. This lesson can serve as an introduction to future speech assignments.

This training provides an in-depth exploration of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and how to align what occurs in the classroom with these standards. to support teachers, administrators, and programs as they work to implement and align with the CCRS.

This COP is focused on writing instruction for intermediate and advanced level adult basic education (ABE) students. The information provided in this training is intended to guide teachers of these adult learning communities to prepare and deliver instruction, including appropriate instructional supports that promote student achievement.
