Universal Design for Learning: Developing Programs for Adults with Learning Disabilities
Virtual Community of Practice (CoP)
This fully online CoP incorporates the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and introduces accommodations and modifications that support learning, self-determination, and success.
The CoP offers an opportunity to discuss the challenges adult education professionals face while supporting adults with learning disabilities and share strategies and tools that work.
Participants will be able to apply UDL principles to design curriculum, instructional methods, and assessments that accommodate and engage all learners including students with learning disabilities.
With more than 8 participants, CALPRO can set up a regional CoP for your agency/consortium.
CALPRO Research Forum: Formative Assessment for Data-Informed Differentiated Instruction
This one-hour webinar explores how formative assessment can enhance teaching and learning to support adult learners' persistence and goal achievement. The webinar will address common misconceptions about formative assessment, such as the belief that itâs too time-consuming or only useful for teachers. Through examining real-life examples, participants will learn strategies for collecting and analyzing learner data to inform differentiated instruction. The session will include practical examples, tools for implementation, and opportunities for reflection and discussion.

Hosted by San Joaquin Adult Education Consortium How can you prepare your learners to succeed in the workforce? Find out what employers say are essential skills for today's workforce. This 2-hour session shows you how to integrate transferable skills seamlessly in the adult education classroom. Teaching Adults to Read (Online)
Course Description:This course is for adult educators and explores evidence-based instructional practices for supporting adult readers across levels, from beginning alphabetics through advanced comprehension. The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course; webinar dates and times will be announced and posted. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), if they wish.Goals:Through this course, participants will learn about a range of topics to support their adult learners, including diagnostic assessment, alphabetics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension for learners at varying levels of reading proficiency.Registration Information:There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.Registered participants will receive final confirmation and details by Friday, February 6, 2026. Evidence-Based Writing Instruction in the ESL Classroom (Online)
This course is underway and no longer available for registration.Course Description:This course helps participants improve their writing instruction for ESL students by applying (1) research-based instructional techniques, (2) protocols for analyzing studentsâ work, and (3) guided instructional plans. The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course; webinar dates and times will be announced and posted. There will be asynchronous online activities, including forum discussions and job-embedded lesson planning and implementation, before, in-between, and after the required two Face-to Face sessions. These three-hour in-person workshops are scheduled for Tuesdays, March 3 and March 17, 5:00pm - 8:00 pm at Escondido Adult School.Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (16 hours).Registration Information:This tailored regional CoP is designed for ESL teachers at Escondido Adult School.
