Effective Lesson Planning
Workshop Description :Plan and deliver effective lessons! This course takes participants step by step through the process of lesson design and provides an opportunity to create a lesson plan using the OTAN Online Lesson Plan Builder. Participants will learn up-to-date strategies for planning lessons using a combination of the WIPPEA stages and âbackward design.â Using the information and skills taught in this course, participants will find that lesson planning becomes a quick, easy process. This course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. A kick-off Webinar will take place in the first week and the date and time will be announced and posted. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), if they wish.Goals :The goal of this CALPRO course is to provide teachers with a model for designing effective lesson plans.Registration Information :There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.Contact Information :Please contact calpro@air.org with any questions.
Introduction to the English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education
In October 2016, the American Institutes for Research, under contract with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, published the English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education (ELP Standards for AE). This report presents and explains the ELP Standards for AE and their relevance to adult education programs. This webinar will provide an introduction to the standards, explain the development process (including guiding principles and design parameters), and provide an overview of the structure, use, and supports for the standards that are found in the report. These supports include two views of the standards with their correspondences to the College and Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, and Mathematical and Science Practices, scenarios that provide examples of instruction based on the standards, a glossary of key terms, and examples of instructional scaffolds and supports for learners at varying levels of English language proficiency. The intended audience for the webinar, and for the report itself, is broad and includes all practitioners involved in the education of adult English Language Learners.
College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education
Presenter: Susan Pimentel, cofounder of StandardsWork, Inc., and author of College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult EducationIn this session, Susan Pimentel discussed the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards for Adult Education. The presentation provided background information on how and why these standards were developed. Pimentel introduced the key advances prompted by the standards for both ELA/Literacy and math, and she shared some of the implications these have for instruction.
Mastering the English Language Proficiency Standards
ESL instructors can benefit from familiarity with and reliance on the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards for Adult Education (AE) to guide instruction toward the increased rigor and skills necessary for successful transition to work or to postsecondary training or further education and for participation in communities that adult learners need.
Applying the English Language Proficiency Standards

Increasing Rigor in the ESL and Basic Skills Classroom

Federal funding for adult education and College and Career Readiness Standards are two of the signposts pointing us towards increasing the rigor of instruction in adult education to help learners reach their education and career goals. Betsy Parrish is a national expert on increasing rigor in adult education classrooms. She has published articles on the topic and created many training materials for teachers. In this webinar, she will discuss the significance of increasing rigor, and she will provide several examples of classroom activities for embedding instruction in academic language, higher order reading and listening strategies, organizational and note-taking strategies, and critical thinking at every level from beginning to advanced. This session is appropriate for ESL, ABE and ASE instructors.
Making Program Changes to Address New Math Standards

Diablo Adult SchoolWith the introduction of GED 2014 and the College and Career Readiness Standards, math requirements for ABE and High School Equivalency learners have become more rigorous. In this webinar, three academic program coordinators discuss how they have revamped their instructional programs to better address the new standards and meet learner needs. Strategies include professional development, creating new curriculum, changing class schedules, and assigning specific math teachers. Hear how they made these changes, what the results look like so far, and lessons learned; the webinar concludes with a question-and-answer period.
Guiding ABE Learners toward College and Career Readiness
Presenter: Wendy Heard, Academic Department Chair and Site Technology Coordinator, Burbank Adult SchoolWendy Heard introduces participants to the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education, and to Webb's Depth of Knowledge wheel, and provides practice in identifying which depth of knowledge various questions address, with the goal of raising the level of questions that adult students address in order to prepare them for more analytical and evaluative thinking required in postsecondary education and on the job. She also reviews how the CCR math standards are constructed and how they change the traditional approach to math instruction.

In this session, participants were introduced to the College and Career Readiness Standards, and considered how these standards can be applied to ESL instruction. They learned and practiced an approach to unpacking each of the standards by identifying the specific skills addressed, applying the standards to currently used textbooks, and considering what additional activities might be needed to supplement existing texts in order to help ESL learners meet the standards.
