Hosted by ABC Adult SchoolThis interactive training empowers adult education instructors to implement the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to guide instruction toward the increased rigor and skills necessary for successful transition to work or to postsecondary training or further education and for participation in communities that adult learners need. This tailored community of practice (CoP) introduces the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and provides an opportunity for participants to plan classroom activities that incorporate the standards. Location: ABC Adult SchoolDate: Thursday, December 4, 2025 (Choose Thursday evening or Friday morning)Time: 7:00pm - 9:00pmRegistration Information:This tailored regional CoP is designed for the ABC Adult School staff and teachers.There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.  

This course is underway and no longer available for registration.Course Description:This course helps participants improve their writing instruction for ESL students by applying (1) research-based instructional techniques, (2) protocols for analyzing students’ work, and (3) guided instructional plans. The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course; webinar dates and times will be announced and posted. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.Goals:Each participant will develop an instructional plan to use in their classroom to teach writing effectively to ESL students. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to understand the research on teaching writing to adult ESL students; analyze student work using an evidence-based method to identify specific skills requiring additional instructional attention; and implement evidence-based instructional techniques to improve writing instruction.Registration Information:There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.Registered participants will receive final confirmation and details by Friday, February 20, 2026. We will examine what employers identify as essential skills for today's workforce and explore the projected fastest growing jobs and skills required in those occupations. You will investigate local job trends and discuss how to incorporate transferable skills into your English as a Second Language classroom. This CoP offers examples of contextualizing ESL instruction seamlessly by using workplace activities and forms.This CoP takes place on Moodle and at Escondido Adult School and runs for 6 consecutive weeks, from 02/23/2026 to 04/05/2026. There will be asynchronous online activities, including forum discussions and job-embedded lesson planning and implementation, before, in-between, and after the required two Face-to Face sessions.  These three-hour in-person workshops are scheduled for Tuesdays, March 3 and March 17, 5:00pm - 8:00 pm at Escondido Adult School.Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (16 hours).Registration Information:This tailored regional CoP is designed for ESL teachers at Escondido Adult School. There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.

Hosted by EPIC de Cesar Chavez High School, A Division of FIELD: Farmworker Institute of Education and Leadership DevelopmentIt can be challenging for instructors to provide level-appropriate, engaging instruction for all students in an ESL Multilevel class. Through this 4-hour workshop, participants will be able to facilitate level-appropriate and engaging instruction for students at various proficiency levels.Registration Information:This tailored regional CoP is designed for the teachers at EPIC de Cesar Chavez High School, A Division of FIELD: Farmworker Institute of Education and Leadership Development.There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees. 

Course Description:How do you meet the needs of ESL students in a class with skill levels ranging from beginning to intermediate to advanced? This course presents strategies for planning lessons for learners of widely varying language skills. This course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two live webinars will be scheduled during the course; webinar dates and times will be announced and posted. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSU Sacramento for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.Goals:The goal of this workshop is to help participants develop skills in managing the ESL multilevel class.Registration Information:There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees.Registered participants will receive final confirmation and details by Friday, March 27, 2026. Course Description:This course will introduce participants to the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards and provide strategies for using the standards to guide and inform instruction. ESL instructors can benefit from familiarity with and reliance on the ELP Standards for Adult Education to guide instruction toward the increased rigor and skills that adult learners need for successful transition to work, postsecondary training, or further education, and for participation in communities. The course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. Two 90-minute webinars will be scheduled during the course, with a makeup option offered to accommodate time conflicts. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (15 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.Goals:The goals of this course are to introduce ESL instructors to the ELP Standards and how they provide the language support to meet the rigorous requirements of the College and Career Readiness Standards for adults; to explore and practice applying the standards to teaching; and to develop a deep understanding of the requirements of academic rigor along with scaffolding strategies to help adult students reach their goals.Registration Information:There is no registration fee to participate.
