California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project

The Career Technical Education (CTE) Model Curriculum Standards are designed to assist California districts and schools in developing high-quality curriculum and instruction to help ensure that students are career and college ready and to prepare them for future careers. The model standards were created with assistance from more than 300 representatives from business, industry, postsecondary, and secondary education and were reviewed by approximately 1,000 individuals, including members of the general public. The standards are rigorous, evidence-based, relevant, and reasonable in scope. They offer clear guidelines for course content development and expectations for student achievement.

To support adult learners in achieving their personal, academic, or career goals, educators must design engaging and effective instruction that acknowledges and builds upon learners’ strengths and meets their needs.In this webinar, we will explore strategies for differentiating and scaffolding instruction, as well as using formative assessment to guide learner progress. The session will highlight the value of data-informed, learner-centered design in adult education and offer actionable insights for creating supportive learning environments.

Hosted by Sweetwater UHSD Adult EducationThis tailored three-hour in-person CoP is designed for faculty at Sweetwater UHSD Adult Education. Using scaffolding, differentiation, and explicit strategy instruction, this interactive workshop empowers CTE instructors to support English Language Learners in their class. The session will showcase effective instructional practices that leverage learners' strengths and support strategy development in contextualized learning. Registration Information:This tailored regional CoP is designed for the Sweetwater Adult School teachers.There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees. 

Workshop Description :How can you prepare your learners to succeed in the workforce? Find out what employers say are essential skills for today's workforce. This session shows you how to connect transferable skills in the classroom to the workplace.This is the first of two sessions; each session is broken into two parts (4 webinars total). Part 2 of Session I will take place on May 16, 2024, from 4:00-5:30pm. Session II is geared toward implementing integrated and contextualized instruction for specific content areas.Please note: Registering for Part 1 of either session automatically registers you for Part 2 of that session.Goals :The goal is to provide background on skills transferable from the classroom to the workplace and to teach students how to articulate those skills. Session I emphasizes the need to directly teach transferable skills and the connection between using these skills in the classroom and in the workplace. Critical Democratic Literacy (CDL) plays a pivotal role in empowering students to become engaged and informed citizens, enabling them to challenge influential institutions, question unfair policies, and critically evaluate outdated traditions. Individuals equipped with CDL understand political and civic systems, allowing them to navigate these systems effectively and contribute meaningfully to the improvement of their communities. CALPRO has developed a new Community of Practice on developing adult learners' CDL, and it is designed to support educators in amplifying student voices and managing contemporary challenges.
