California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project

Workshop Description:The California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO), in conjunction with the California Department of Education (CDE), is seeking applications for CALPRO’s Integrated Education and Training (IET) Implementation Clinic (the Clinic). We are seeking agency teams consisting of an IET program administrator, an English as a Second Language instructor and a Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructor. There are 5 principal features of this unique online professional learning opportunity. The innovative format of the Implementation Clinic features two day-long virtual training sessions; three live, interactive online sessions; ongoing online discussions, and completion of a capstone project and presentation of the project at the second day-long session. CALPRO is pleased to announce IET clinic participating teams will now have the support of an IET implementation coach to support you for one year upon completion of the IET clinic.To apply, each member of the agency team must complete the application by 5:00 PM on February 6, 2025. Course Description:Adult education plays a significant role in the lives of immigrants. Often adult education is the first door through which a new immigrant encounters the world of services and supports available to them as they seek to increase their skills to reach their life goals. As described in the white paper by ALLIES on the Immigrant Integration Framework: “Immigrant integration is... a two-way process involving learning and adaptation by both immigrant communities and receiving communities. Broadening an understanding of diverse perspectives and cultural resources ultimately strengthens both the immigrant and receiving communities, and increases the entire community’s capacity to adapt and respond to a changing global environment." Workshop Description :This course will examine nine strategies that help learners persist and offer adult educators the opportunity to practice and internalize them. The course focuses on motivation and persistence and is relevant for teachers and instructional leaders from all content areas within adult education. This course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks, starting March 17, 2025. Weekly participation is required, though participants may, during a given week, log in whenever they wish. A kick-off Webinar will take place during the first week. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to California State University Sacramento for 1.4 Continuing Education Units if they wish.Goals :There are a number of research-based strategies for helping adults persist in reaching their education goals. The goal of this course is to expose teachers to nine of these strategies, provide opportunities for practice, and encourage the incorporation of these strategies into instructional practice.Registration Information :There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees. It explores the unique characteristics of adult learners as well as adult motivation, needs, and self-concept and their effect on learning. The course also explores adult development and the implications for effective teaching. This course takes place entirely online and runs for four consecutive weeks. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate of participation (14 hours); they are also eligible to apply to CSUS for 1.4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) if they wish.Goals:The goal of this course is to help participants gain a general understanding of adult learning and development so that they can design and deliver instruction that is responsive to the needs of adult learners.Registration Information:There is no registration fee to participate; CALPRO professional development opportunities are available to all California Adult Education Program (CAEP) agencies and employees. Promising Practices for Integrated Education and Training Pathways to Postsecondary Education highlights promising practices for how IET providers can connect IET programs to credit-bearing credentials and pathways to associate degrees.

IET Strategies in Action is a series intended to provide adult educators with a snapshot view of the ways in which some IET programs have implemented IET models and practices that serve diverse student populations in a variety of settings. Promising Practices for Regionally Responsive Integrated Education and Training Programs describes four strategies that some state adult education agencies and local programs have used to respond to regional needs and learners’ career interests.

IET Strategies in Action is a series intended to provide adult educators with a snapshot view of the ways in which some IET programs have implemented IET models and practices that serve diverse student populations in a variety of settings. Promising Practices for Collaborating with Industry and Workforce Development Partners in Integrated Education and Training Programs highlights how IET program providers can collaborate with industry and workforce development organizations to establish IET program design with learner-worker training or work-based learning opportunities.

This issue brief provides an overview of workforce preparation skills, a description of why these skills are important for adult learners, recommendations for implementation, and tips for teaching workforce preparation in the classroom.
