Supporting Immigrant Integration through Civics Education (Online)
Course Description:Adult education plays a significant role in the lives of immigrants. Often adult education is the first door through which a new immigrant encounters the world of services and supports available to them as they seek to increase their skills to reach their life goals. As described in the white paper by ALLIES on the Immigrant Integration Framework: “Immigrant integration is... a two-way process involving learning and adaptation by both immigrant communities and receiving communities. Broadening an understanding of diverse perspectives and cultural resources ultimately strengthens both the immigrant and receiving communities, and increases the entire community’s capacity to adapt and respond to a changing global environment." Presenters: Martin D. Kehe, VP of Products, GED Testing Service, and Joyce Lude, Principal of Roseville Adult SchoolIn this session, presenter Martin Kehe provided an overview of the key features of the new GED test that launched in January 2014 and outlined major differences between the 2012 and 2014 GED tests, such as aligning the new test with college– and career–readiness standards. Mr. Kehe also identified related tools and resources for students, educators, and administrators to analyze student test results and use the data to inform decision–making. Presenter Joyce Lude, Principal of Roseville Adult School, then described what Roseville Joint Union High School District has done to change their practice to accommodate the requirements of the new test and help support improved student outcomes.

Effective Strategies for Writing Instruction (Self-Directed Online)

This course examines the vital role writing plays in ABE, ASE, and ESL instruction, especially in helping learners become college- and career-ready. Participants begin by identifying possible challenges in teaching writing and strategies for overcoming them. Through interactive, multimedia presentations, participants identify the key components of the writing process and discover research-based instructional strategies for supporting their students' writing development. Finally, participants learn how to apply a rubric to evaluate student work and prepare a lesson plan with instruction designed to address students' areas of need. The estimated course completion time is 4 hours.
