California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project

Hosted by Los Angeles City CollegeCivic Education and Democratic Literacy play a pivotal role in empowering students to become engaged and informed citizens. Individuals equipped with this knowledge understand political and civic systems, allowing them to navigate these systems effectively and contribute meaningfully to the improvement of their communities.  The goal of this CoP is to enhance the capacity of adult educators and programs to provide instruction that amplifies student perspective and voice, builds civic engagement, and dives deep into participatory approaches to democratic processes for adults including those who are developing literacy and language skills.Date: 3/07/2025Time: 9 a.m.- 12 p.m.Location: LACC Room: TBDRegistration Information:This tailored regional CoP is hosted by Los Angeles City College. The Career Technical Education (CTE) Model Curriculum Standards are designed to assist California districts and schools in developing high-quality curriculum and instruction to help ensure that students are career and college ready and to prepare them for future careers. The model standards were created with assistance from more than 300 representatives from business, industry, postsecondary, and secondary education and were reviewed by approximately 1,000 individuals, including members of the general public. The standards are rigorous, evidence-based, relevant, and reasonable in scope. They offer clear guidelines for course content development and expectations for student achievement.

From the ADVANCE IET initiative, this sample syllabus provides a model example of how to structure and communicate details to learners about the aims, expectations, and core skills components (industry specific, academic, and workplace skills) to be developed within a potential patient care technician course.

This training outlines the process of curriculum alignment to help adult learners successfully transition within adult education programs and from adult education to post-secondary environments.Registration Information:This tailored regional CoP is hosted by the Victor Valley Adult Education Regional Consortium and will take place at the Apple Valley Adult Education site. This community of practice helps participants improve their writing instruction for their adult students by applying research-based instructional techniques.
