She also reviews how the CCR math standards are constructed and how they change the traditional approach to math instruction.

Ramirez, Professor Emeritus at MiraCosta College and teacher educator, author and consultantIn this session, participants were introduced to the College and Career Readiness Standards, and considered how these standards can be applied to ESL instruction. They learned and practiced an approach to unpacking each of the standards by identifying the specific skills addressed, applying the standards to currently used textbooks, and considering what additional activities might be needed to supplement existing texts in order to help ESL learners meet the standards.
Facilitator: Leila Rosemberg, Secondary Programs Coordinator, Culver City Adult School.In this session, Leila Rosemberg, Coordinator of the Adult Secondary program at Culver City Adult School, discusses the National Research Council Math Standards and the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education. She provides numerous examples of math activities that relate to the standards, as well as ways of addressing math anxiety.

Adelson-Goldstein, CALPRO FacilitatorIn this session, participants looked at the research supporting the use of the writing process in second language writing instruction, in order to explore activities and tasks that guide learners through that process. The webinar focused on the pre-writing tasks to help learners delve into the writing topic and organize their thinking; writing models and prompts that are meaningful for adults; and editing exercises and instructor feedback that help learners polish their work. Ways to celebrate successful learning outcomes through publishing learners work were also addressed.

In this problem solving exchange session, facilitators discussed the power of PLCs and what distinguishes them from other forms of professional development, lessons learned by one agency, Pasadena City College, on its PLC implementation journey and ideas for starting PLCs and resources to support implementation.

CALPRO PD Partner Susan Briggs partnered with colleague Rachel Monn to share how they used Professional Learning Community (PLC) principles to implement managed enrollment. Throughout the presentation they focused on how they enabled students to move through the program while experiencing satisfaction and success at each phase; the presenters also discussed how to record student enrollment accurately, how to encourage student attendance and goal-attainment, and how to deliver coherent and focused curricula.
Presenter: Ashley Ruiz, Instructor, Paramount Adult SchoolIn this Instructors Forum Webinar, CALPRO PD Partner Ashley Ruiz shared information and research she gained from attending sessions in the 21st Century Skills strand of the joint COABE and CCAE national conference in April 2011.Ruiz specifically discussed: the demands of the 21st Century Workforce, successful workforce development program structures and models, and ideas and tips for ABE/ASE programs to successfully prepare ABE/ASE students for the 21st Century Workforce.

In this third Webinar of the Instructors Forum, presenters Passeggi and Brown provided information about Learning to Achieve, a research-based approach to serving adults with learning disabilities that was developed by the National Institute for Literacy, and discussed how Mt. Diablo implemented this approach. Objectives included the following: 1) identify research-based tools and techniques used to teach adults with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) effectively; and 2) identify and implement instructional approaches that help ALL adults, particularly adults with learning disabilities, learn content from written materials.
Presenter: Karyn Ruiz, Instructor at Visalia Adult SchoolIn this second Webinar of the Instructors Forum, the presenter demonstrated how to contextualize workforce skills into adult basic education (ABE)/adult secondary education (ASE) instruction. Objectives included identifying skills being taught to students, assisting students to articulate and reflect on what they are learning, and integrating workplace documents and activities into classroom instruction.
