California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project

Facilitators: Karen Williams, Executive Director of Stanislaus Literacy Center and Rebecca Wagner, Executive Director of the Community Learning Center in PhiladelphiaIn this session, the presenters explained the challenges with learner persistence faced by both agencies and why they decided to focus on learner persistence. They also explained the methodology they used to address learner persistence in a student-centered way and the outcomes of implementing changes based on what they learned about why their students were not persisting. The presenters provided an opportunity for participants to share their ideas for addressing learner persistence in their programs as well.  

Facilitator: David Williams, Principal, Beaumont Adult SchoolIn this session, the presenter explained the purpose of the COE accreditation process, what type of organizations are eligible for COE accreditation, what the benefits are for having COE accreditation and how WASC and the COE accreditation process are aligned. He also provided an overview of the COE accreditation application process along with useful COE application documents.  

Facilitator: Nancy George, Director, Adult Education, New Haven Adult SchoolIn this session, the presenter discussed one school?s successful effort to create a Professional Learning Community (PLC), how to manage time and resources, and what it really takes to implement PLCs successfully.

Hood Community CollegeIn this first Webinar of the 2011-12 Administrators Forum, CALPRO Professional Development (PD) Partners Lynne Nicodemus and Kelley Keith shared the theoretical foundation and practical applications for preparing learners for the 21st Century workforce.This Webinar is a product of the April 2011 COABE/CCAE National Adult Education Conference PD Partners effort. CALPRO sponsored ten PD Partners to attend the joint conference in exchange for their disseminating the research, policy, practice, and resources from the conference with the rest of the California adult education community through articles and Webinars.In this session the presenters discussed: characteristics of the current global economy and their implications for adult education, four policies that will guide adult education agencies to meet these challenges, and the Oakland Adult and Community Education pilot project that demonstrates how these policies can be implemented. 

Facilitator: Dr. Cherise Moore, Director, Educational Support Services, Burbank Unified School DistrictIn this session the presenter focused on building a partnership between an adult school and a community college and she explored types of partnership agreements. The presenter also examined developing a postsecondary bridge program and developing classes to support adult students' awareness of college options, and she examined the significance and role of counseling in supporting postsecondary transition. 

Facilitator: Lori Strumpf, President, Strumpf Associates: Center for Strategic ChangeIn this session the presenter addressed the principles and practices of strategic community partnership building, strategies for developing and maintaining effective partnerships with entities in the community, and the benefits and risks associated with partnership building.
